Joy. Fully.

Fully: thoroughly, completely, abundantly, entirely, wholly

Have you ever experienced joy, fully?

I am a decently joyous person. I can find joy in very simple things. There have been times in my life I have experienced joy fully, but when I think about it… those moments are much fewer and farther between than I would like.

I think sometimes we wait for things to be perfect before we feel like we can have joy and so we wait and wait; life is not perfect. Sometimes, we think that a certain person will bring us joy.

There is nothing like having a small child throw their arms around your neck for a hug. But, if we are not careful we will rely on that small child to bring us joy. That can turn in to an unhealthy dependence.

Our spouse used to give us butterflies and brought us so much joy that when that joy fades, we can’t understand why our spouse doesn’t bring us joy anymore. Sadly, too many people think that means it is time to look for joy in someone else. It is an endless cycle.

Joy is an inside job. It can be experienced in moments with others but it can’t be dependent on others. Those people who seem to take everything for granted, nothing is ever good enough, they are not grateful and something is always off, they don’t have internal joy.

Romans 15:13 “Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you believe so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”

Ongoing joy that overflows despite circumstances, that comes from God. You can try all you want to be joyous but unless it is God that fills you with it, it will fade. Joyous people don’t just have great easy lives, they have allowed God to fill them with hope, peace and joy.

This world will make you cynical, judgy, rude, bitter, bratty, nagging and just miserable if you let it. I certainly don’t want that to be the legacy I leave behind.

God has always made a way for me. Jesus died on a cross for me. I am never alone. He wants me to live an abundant life. He has plans to prosper me. - I want my life to reflect all of that! It is all true. I believe what the Word says, so why would I live it out differently?

How can I live joyfully? How could I not after all that God has done for me!?

It is not that bad things don’t happen, but I chose to trust God through those and not magnify it. How can you start today getting to a place where you experience joy fully?

  1. Ask God to invade your heart and fill you with hope, joy and peace.

  2. Pay attention to what you think about. Use this scripture to help you!

Philippians 4:8 “Finally brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable—if there is any moral excellence and if there is anything praiseworthy—dwell on these things.”
